    • «i»Hazel Margaret Heggen, 85, of Minneapolis, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Redeemer Residence on Lyndale Avenue. She was born on Dec. 5, 1915, the daughter of Anton and Sophia (Brieby/Olson) Heggen, on the family farm south of Rothsay. She was baptized into the Christian faith at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rothsay on Feb. 1, 1916, and she confirmed her faith in the same church on May 1, 1930. She attended elementary school in District #5, rural Wilkin County and graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1934. She attended Moorhead State Teachers College for two years and earned her teaching certificate in 1936. She taught elementary school from 1936 to 1945 in Wheaton, Appleton, Campbell and Bemidji. She enlisted in the United States Army as a WAC (Womens Army Corps) on April 11, 1945. She served as a surgical technician at Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver, Colo. She was discharged on June 30, 1948. Following her discharge, she taught in San Bernadino, Calif. She enrolled at the University of Minnesota, receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in the teaching of handicapped children in 1950. In 1952, she received her Masters Degree in Educational Psychology from the U of M. In the fall of 1951, she began teaching at the Michael Dowling School in Minneapolis. For many years, she taught the physically handicapped/developmentally disabled class. She retired in 1977. Ms. Heggen and her friend, Gertrude Lang, traveled extensively throughout the world, visiting every continent except Antarctica. She had spent a month in Hawaii during the winter for the past 20 years. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Minneapolis since 1957. She worked as a volunteer at Fairview Southdale Hospital from September 1988 to August 2000. She was a long-time member of the Moneta Investment Club. She enjoyed golf, bridge, and for many years had season tickets to the University of Minnesota football games. She was preceded in death by her sister, Gladys Honrud; five brothers, Clarence (in infancy), Raymond, Clifford, Alvin and Vernon; one niece, Lorraine Shirley; and one nephew, Ronald Heggen. She is survived by three sisters-in-law, Gladys Heggen of Fergus Falls, Evelyn Heggen of Tacoma, Wash., and Esther Heggen of Barnesville; eight nieces; three nephews; and numerous grand nieces and nephews«/i»
